Can I become a member? If you are interested in joining the BGB, please contact us.
-
Is it English mandatory to become a member?Yes. BGB is an international association and English is the language used in our meetings, communications, and events.
-
Do I have to pay a fee?Yes, there is a membership fee. The funds are necessary to cover room rental, events, and operational costs. The membership fees are the only source of income for BGB.
-
How much is the fee and which are the benefits of becoming a member? The membership fee is 8 CHF per month per person, paid annually. As a member, you are entitled to participate in any event, tournament, or contest that we organize. You can also borrow any game from the BoardGameBasel game library (called the Pool of Games) for free, returning it within the next two sessions. Additionally, you have access to Spielbox magazines, and, upon request, you can keep the promotional items included. Of course, you’re also welcome to attend all our meetings to play new games and meet interesting, friendly people.
-
I'm considering joining BGB. Can I come directly to one of your meetings? Not immediately. There is a short process where we first meet online to explain how BGB operates and answer any questions you may have. Afterward, we can schedule a session for you to attend, completely free of charge. If you are interested contact us.
-
What happens if I do not have time to assist the meetings or I don't like it and I want to cancel my membership but I already payed the whole year?Easy, we return the money for the remaining sessions upon request.
-
Where does the money go if there is plenty for paying the room rental? This is a non-profit association. Therefore we do not get a cent from this money. With this money we can organize events, as tournaments or barbacues. All the money is invested in the association and, as a consequence, in the members themselves.
-
What would be the frequency of meetings for playing? We follow a twice-per-month schedule, the second and fourth Fridays of each month. But check (or import) the BGB calendar.
-
Why is not done in someone's house? I offer mine! That's a very nice offer, but we think that is better to be as independent as possible. It might happen that the host is not avaliable while the remaining people is. Therefore, we think that a neutral place, where any member can access within the scheduled time, is a more reliable and confortable option.
-
And what about going to a bar?We think that the atmosphere is not as private and relaxed as in a room specifically intended for gaming. Secondly, we don't feel confortable playing several hours in a bar without consuming. Therefore, in one hour you'll probably spend more than the monthly fee of the association. Third, boardgames and food or drinks in the same table are not a good combination.
-
Can children join to the meetings? At this moment no. Only people older than 18 can join. There is plenty of options for children (i.e. game libraries, family centers, Quartiers, etc...), while there is no so much for adults. Therefore, this association is meant for adults and wants to offer the possibility of brain-melting hours of strategy.
-
What happens if we're 12 (or 20) persons that want to play the same day?We simply split into multiple groups. We have enough space and games to allow several groups to play in parallel. Additionally, it's unlikely that everyone will attend every session at the exact same time. The room remains open during the scheduled hours, so participants can come in, play, and leave whenever they wish.
-
Can I bring my own games to the meetings?Of course! In fact, it's encouraged for everyone to bring games they want to play. This is a great opportunity if you're interested in playing with new people, testing a game with a different number of players, or trying out a brand new game that you've recently purchased.
-
Who founded this?We are Hirginia and Rubén, a married Spanish couple who have been living in Basel since 2010. Hirginia is a pianist at Musikschule Sissach, while Rubén is an astrophysicist at the University of Basel. We both have a passion for board games, and our interest in this hobby grew even more after moving to Basel. That passion inspired us to found the BoardGameBasel association, with the aim of sharing our love for board games and meeting new friends from around the world.
-
How seriously are you taking this?Absolutely serious. The associations in Switzerland can be as powerful as political parties. Of course, that's not our intention. This is a gaming association! But we follow the rules. We have our statutes and the standard organs as Executive Committee and General Assembly. Most of this will be transparent to the members, unless they want to take a deeper commitment.
